Histone methylation is an important post-translational modification that is involved in regulating genome compaction and gene expression. There are two types of histone methyltransferases, those that methylate lysines (KMTs) and those that methylate arginines (RMTs). Of the histone demethylases, mainly lysine demethylases (KDMs) have been identified. Only one arginine demethylase (RDM) has been identified, JMJD6.
