ATF 2 is a transcriptional activator that binds the cAMP-responsive element (CRE) and interacts with c-Jun to stimulate CRE transcription. This protein is also capable of acetylating Histone H2B and Histone H4 in vitro as a histone acetyltransferase (HAT).
